The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival is one of the oldest continuously held traditional music festivals in the United States. Founded in 1961, it has grown from a small gathering in Topanga Canyon into a major Southern California cultural event celebrating bluegrass, old-time music, folk singing, and dance. The festival is spread across five stages and offers more than just the main competitions:
The Contests: Amateur and aspiring musicians compete in categories like banjo (bluegrass and traditional), fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and singing. There is also a popular "Step Dance" competition.
Live Music: After the morning contests, the afternoon features professional headliners and bands across various folk and Americana genres.
Jamming: One of the hallmarks of the event is the open jamming. Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and join "circles" that pop up under the trees throughout the ranch.
Activities: You’ll find workshops, a "petting zoo" for instruments (great for kids), artisan vendors, and food trucks.
